| The Long Beach Century Club was formed in 1957 by a group of prominent Long Beach sports enthusiasts as a nonprofit corporation dedicated to the promotion of amateur athletics in the city. Originally founded as the Sports Committee of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, the group consists of business and sports figures who contribute, not only financially, but also by the donation of their time, toward the betterment of the youth of the city through athletics.
Over the years, the Century Club has supported thousands of athletes in Long Beach. It has sent athletes to all corners of the globe, many of who have returned to Long Beach with national and world championships. Athletes and teams from virtually all sports have benefited from Century Club funds, including badminton, baseball, cross-country, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, marathon running, rowing, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water skiing, wrestling and athletes from the Special Olympics.
Athletes and community individuals are recognized annually at a banquet conducted in February and attended by over 600 people. In addition, during the month of June the Club conducts another sports banquet honoring the athletes in our City’s Middle Schools. The Century Club has funded over $2.5 million dollars during its 51 years of operation to deserving athletes.
The Club holds meetings every Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Grand Convention Center located at 4101 E. Willow Street. The meeting consists of presentations from sports figures, Athletic Directors from the University and City College and presentations from various teams at these institutions as well as the local High Schools.
The Club is continually seeking new members and sponsors to assist us in our endeavors and anyone interested in joining or assisting can contact the President, Bill Baca @ 562-866-3213 or billbacak@msn.com
